Parkinson Basics

The author

Monique Thoonsen

Monique trained as a physiotherapist and pedagogue and is an expert in sensory processing. She writes, teaches, and consults on this subject and has authored several books on sensory processing.

In 2021, Monique was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. As a healthcare professional with firsthand experience, she works with teams that support people with Parkinson’s. She noticed a significant gap in knowledge about the wide range of symptoms that can occur with Parkinson’s and how to address them effectively. This realization inspired her to create comprehensive resources, listing various symptoms in an accessible way while offering practical tips.  Monique’s unique perspective, combining her professional expertise and personal experience, has shaped these valuable contributions to the understanding of Parkinson’s.

"Riding the dopamine waves"

In 2021, Monique was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Ever since, she has been riding the dopamine waves, feeling mostly ‘on’, occasionally ‘off ’ and sometimes riding high and feeling quite hyper. Which is very conducive to writing and other creative pursuits 😊.

Parkinson’s associations around the world play a vital role. They provide reliable information about the condition, answer our questions, represent our voices in policy and research, and create spaces for connection; like support groups, cafés, courses, and training. They also advocate for better access to treatment and speak up when there is a medication shortage.

They do all this, and so much more, but they can’t do it without the support of their members.

Whether you are living with Parkinson’s or supporting someone who is, becoming a member makes a difference. Some organizations also offer special memberships for partners, family members, or caregivers.
